Here I review all types of plays. It doesn't matter where I have seen them, I am not trying to slam any theatre. I am simply speaking of the play itself. So, if anything, I am slamming the playwright....justly. It is just my opinion though, you are more than welcome to ignore me. Everyone's tastes are different.

The Phantom of the Opera

This one is a must-see! It doesn't matter if you feel you are to mature, too manly, too cold-hearted etc etc, you must see this play. It was written by some french guy named Gaston Leroux back in 1909. Andrew Lloyd Webber, the famous Broadway producer made it what it is today. It is a huge spectacle of a show with lots of dramatic music, frightening scenes and beautiful ballads.

It has everything a woman could want. A young woman torn between two men. One is the mysterious, brooding type. The other is handsome and what he lacks in personality he makes up for in money. The young woman prances through the play in beautiful dress and of course, her story ends happily.

It has everything a man could want. A gruesomely deformed man who goes about killing people and demanding payment for not killing again. He has his own private lair kind of like Superman's Fortress of Solitude but much more accessible.  His story ends with an epic battle scene in which the love of his life essentially screws him over. But at least he lives to kill again.

This play has everything for both men and women to leave the theatre feeling satisfied.

Mamma Mia

And now for that classic musical with far too many ABBA songs in it.....actually it is just the right amount. ;) Mamma Mia centers around a young woman, Sophie, who is about to be married. She grew up in Greece with her mother and never knew who her father was. She stumbles across one of her mom's old diaries and discovers that she has three possible fathers. Needless to say, her mother "got busy" when she was young. Sophie invites all three of the prospective fathers to the wedding and hilarity ensues.

Even though it may seem like this play is far too mature for younger audiences, the musical aspect of it tones down the seriousness of the plot. Kids would love watching this fun musical and parents would love watching something other than Barney of Ice. It is like children's movies nowadays. The child thinks a Disney movie is just a fun story about a princess. The adult is able to read between the lines and get all of the adult jokes out of the experience.

All around, this is a great play for the whole family to watch.
